Adolescence and Mental Health

Blog

Adolescence is the age of children and young adults, generally thought to be between the ages of 10 and 19. It begins with puberty, and lasts until the individual is a young adult. Bangladesh has a youth and adolescent population of approximately 52 million, about 1/3 of the country’s total population.

This period in life is an absolutely critical time for a young person’s growth. They are experiencing the world with new eyes, ready to take on new responsibilities and roles. They are constantly absorbing information, and we have to ensure that the information that we give them is going to help them progress in the world.

Adolescences is defined by rapid social, physical and emotional growth and change. With the amount of pressure that is being put on them by society at this time on top of their already stressful lives, it is no wonder that their mental health is vulnerable to decline. Countless research studies have shown significant links between young adults who use social media and depression. Some of the reasons, according to them, can be traced to online harassment, bullying, and peer pressure. We need to recognize the warning signs of young people who may be experiencing mental health issues. If we are able to analyze, understand, and proceed to treat these problems at this young of an age, it can create significant impact on their lives from then on. The sooner that mental health is treated, the more beneficial it will be in the long-term.

Reflecting back on our own time when we were adolescents, we can also remember the confusion and worry we experienced. For this new generation, the feelings can be further amplified. It can be worrying, even scary, to be thrust into a new part of life so rapidly. More is expected of you, and with that comes more pressure. This kind of stress can have long-term damage on a growing mind.

Adolescents these days have it very differently- they have the internet and social media giving them an added amount of stress that other generations have never had. Social media breeds a sense of unhealthy competition. Peer pressure is prevalent and privacy is becoming nonexistent. The rate of cyberbullying and cybercrime have detrimental impacts on young ones, who are vulnerable and impressionable. As young Bangladeshis become increasingly connected to the internet world, they too, are at risk. According to the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission, the total number of internet subscribers has reached 90.501 million. As internet users grow at an astonishing rate, we must be prepared for the risks that come with it.
